October 29, 2001, Leola,
PA What do you get when you take 269
lbs. of sausage, spread it into a 6-foot diameter patty and cook it over a
charcoal fire? Or when you spend over 4 hours shaping 150 lbs. of icing?
Hopefully a world record! That’s what took place recently at the Farm Show
Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania,
during Feeser’s Distribution's 100th Anniversary Fall Food Show, where
various food manufacturers vied to create items that will qualify for
inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records. On hand to verify the
attempts were representatives from Pennsylvania Scale Company, manufacturer
of the Model 6600 Base Scale used to weigh the attempts, as well as
officials from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s
Bureau of Rides & Measurements Standards. All submissions to Guinness
need to be verified for accuracy before they are accepted and confirmed.
The 6-foot diameter sausage patty created by Hatfield Packing Company,
weighed-in at 252 lbs. after cooking and will be submitted to Guinness as
the world’s largest sausage patty. The icing, which was formed into a 36”
plus rose for Hunt-Wesson, Inc. will be submitted as the world’s largest
cake icing decoration. Both items were prepared on site and weighed on the
Pennsylvania Scale Model 6600 Base Scale, monitored for accuracy by the
Charles M. Bruckner, director, and Kenneth C. Deitzler, chief of weights
and measures, from the Bureau of Ride & Measurement Standards prior to
submission to Guinness. This is the third interesting application for the
Model 6600 Base for Pennsylvania Scale Company. Three years ago, the scale
was installed in the National Zoo’s Big Cat exhibition area, and last year
a 6600 Base was used to verify the weight of the world’s largest pumpkin.
